LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For Bellarmine students who are looking for upcoming spring break plans, the music department has them covered. For one week students, whether they are majoring in music or not, can experience both Poland and the Czech Republic with the Bellarmine Oratorios Society chorus.
Every other year during spring break, the chorus travels to compete and perform in historic venues in different countries in Europe. With an opportunity to earn college credit, students will be able to explore Krakow, Wroclaw, Prague and other cultural stops during their trip, including the Wieliczka Salt Mine and Auschwitz.
For students in the music department, this trip is an opportunity to gain experience in music and to perform around the world.
Evan Bullock, a senior majoring in vocal performance and music technology, said that students who aren't music majors could still get a lot out of the experience.
"It's a really good opportunity to learn about other cultures with music...it'll be an awesome experience (and) it'll be a lot of fun," Bullock said.
For past trips, the chorus have traveled to Italy, France, Scotland and Spain. This will be the first year where Bellarmine students will have the opportunity to travel to Poland and the Czech Republic with the music department.
Tim Glasscock, the associate professor of choral music and conducting and director of this trip, said that once students arrive in the two countries, they could either stay with the chorus during their practices or venture out to explore.
"It's for students to go and experience the culture... it's a lot of fun," Glasscock said.
Having been on more than 18 trips with Bellarmine’s music department, Glasscock has had a lot of experience traveling with students.
The music department typically takes up to 15 to 20 students per trip with up to 70 people traveling including community members, faculty and staff.
For a price of $3,980, every aspect of traveling, besides souvenirs, is completely covered for students. This includes flights, hotels, bus transportation, museum/landmark entrances and daily breakfasts.
For those who may not be able to afford the full price of attending this trip, there are scholarships available through Bellarmine’s study abroad office that students can apply for to help reduce the cost.
"Go to Bellarmine's website and look at our study abroad page. We have a full listing of all scholarships that are available," Tara Brinkmoeller, administrative support assistant in the study abroad office, said.
Students can find Brinkmoeller's office on the lower level of the library in the honors lounge in room B07. For additional scholarship information, students can contact the study abroad office at internationalstudies@bellarmine.edu.
All students can apply for a spot to experience Poland and the Czech Republic, Glasscock said. The deadline to apply is October 15th.
Students can apply through this link: Bellarmine Oratorio Society - Central Europe Concert Tour.
