Happening just across the street from Bellarmine, Porchfest is an annual local musical festival in the Deer Park neighborhood. People in the community host musicians on their front porches, giving the performers a stage. This year, Porchfest will be held on Sept. 18 between 2 and 6 p.m. and will feature more than 30 musicians on 17 porches across the neighborhood.
Kirk Dailey, a Deer Park resident, said the neighborhood association works to bring the community together and add to the friendliness of the neighborhood through different events, one of those events being Porchfest. “I think it’s really cool that we get to celebrate local artists of various genres of music,” Dailey said.
Dailey attended Porchfest once, loved the atmosphere, and decided to host this year. He and his wife will host pop/rock musician Kevin Niehoff from 2 to 4 p.m.
Deer Park resident Jessica Vaughn has attended the event for the past two years to support one of her friends who is a musician. While doing so, she learned about new genres of music as well as new artists in Louisville. Vaughn described Porchfest as a “chill, homegrown vibe. It’s a good way to feature local people in the community you wouldn’t normally hear about,” she said.
Bellarmine junior Jessica Stephens said Porchfest provides a friendly atmosphere. “Since it’s right there in the [Bellarmine] neighborhood, I think it’s a good idea for students to go,” she said. “It’s a really welcoming environment.”
In addition to Porchfest, the Deer Park neighborhood also hosts Neighborfest and Community Yard Sale, both on Sept. 17.
The Community Yard Sale runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at several houses in the neighborhood. To track the various yard sales in the neighborhood, students can download the Yard Sale Treasure Map app in the Apple App Store or on Google Play.
Neighborfest will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the parking lots of Deer Park Baptist Church and Bardstown Road Presbyterian. The 13th annual Neighborfest will have live music, carnival games, free food, and more.
Porchfest and Neighborfest are both free, making them a perfect way for college students to spend their weekend. For more information about Porchfest and other events in the Deer Park neighborhood, visit https://www.deerparklouisville.com/.
