Looking for something to do Saturday night?
The first-ever Battle for Bellarmine is taking place at Frazier Field starting at 3:30 p.m. The event includes a tailgate, a flag football tournament among the first-year, sophomore, junior and senior classes, and a revamped edition of the BU Dance Marathon. The tailgate kicks off at 3:30, the first two of three flag football games will take place at 5 p.m., followed by the BU Dance Marathon at 6 p.m., and the championship game will start at 7 p.m.
The Battle for Bellarmine is a Student Government Association event presented by the junior class representatives in collaboration with the Bellarmine Reproductive Justice Association. Diana Molina is the event coordinator for the BRJA, which is a student interest group that focuses on reproductive justice.
“[We] provide different resources and materials and just make sure people are feeling informed about their sexual health. We’re advocating for reproductive health for the entire community,” Molina said.
BRJA will set up a feminine hygiene drive at the event to collect donations of tampons, pads, and any other feminine hygiene products. All materials will be donated to Up Louisville, an organization that helps women and children who are battling homelessness.
The tailgate will include activities such as a tie-dye station, sound-shaker making, and yard games. A taco truck and a Kona Ice truck will provide refreshments.
The games will use the same format that intramural flag football uses. There are two 10-minute halves, touchdowns are worth six points, and after scoring a touchdown teams can elect to try for a one-, two- or three-point conversion.
The student behind this event, Adriana Eggen, said the idea came to her when she found a shirt in her closet from a powderpuff game she played in high school. BRJA had previously tried to host a powderpuff game event, but was unable to organize it. Eggen said she believed that with extra help, the idea could be expanded and brought to fruition.
“This might be a really good idea to bring all the classes together and create a community-wide event,” Eggen said.
What started as just a flag football game quickly grew into football games, the pre-game tailgate, the feminine hygiene drive, and the new BU Dance Marathon.
The BU Dance Marathon is usually a seven- to eight-hour annual event in Frazier Hall where people dance for as long as they can. The event raises money to send to Norton Children’s Hospital or to a sponsored family that is battling cancer. This year, due to time constraints, the event will be a one-hour break from the football games where people dance as much as they can. Donations will still be accepted for a sponsored family.
The event is free for all Bellarmine students. Anyone interested in playing flag football should go to IMLeagues.com or use the IMLeagues mobile app to sign up.
