University Students' Are Encouraged to De-stress Outside of Class

The semester is in full swing, and Campus Recreation and Wellness is working to help students improve their mental health. Campus Wellness has created the Relaxation Station, which is to help students relax the mind and de-stress. The event will last throughout the month of February on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m to 4 p.m in Centro.

Abby Nelson, a pure wellness educator, said, “The event is meant for students to come by in between classes to take a moment and relax from all the school stress.”

Students can expect an assortment of goodies and activities “to help them focus on mental health issues,” Nelson said.

The station will have various puzzles, coloring pages and other activities to help take students’ minds off the everyday stresses. Some of the activities will include self-care kits and snow globe making. “The station allows students to take a brain break and do something different,” Nelson said.

Back by popular demand is the chair massage. Massages encourage creativity by releasing endorphins in the brain, helping students cope with depression and other mental illnesses, Nelson said. Students can relax and not worry about assignments and tests.

“Getting a massage at school is something you don’t usually get to experience. It was amazing,” sophomore Nickala Peck said. “I was able to focus on my breathing and be at peace. After the massage, I felt rejuvenated and free.”

Senior Madison Lauter said: “The event allowed me to unwind and forget about the everyday stresses collage can put on a college student. Being a nursing major, I am usually the one trying to help other people. It was nice to finally have some me time and unwind.”

Throughout the semester, the Campus Recreation and Wellness plans to hold more events for students including, TRX total body workouts, mindful meditation and yoga. Students can also request workshops and different events by emailing the Bellarmine Campus and Recreation Center . Campus Recreation and Wellness will work. with the Bellarmine SuRF and Bellarmine intramural teams throughout the semester to ensure students have all the right tools to stay mentally fit.
