Dairy Kastle sits on the corner of Eastern Parkway and Bradley Avenue, and although it does not look like much from the outside, the inside is full of delicious ice cream and other sweet treats.
Dairy Kastle opened its windows in 1976 and has been serving the Louisville community ever since. The locally famous treat spot is a short 10 minute drive from Bellarmine, so it is popular among students.
Dairy Kastle’s menu includes milkshakes, sundaes, soft serve and flurries in a variety of flavors, and guests can customize their ice cream with toppings and sauces. Food items like hot dogs and tacos are also available.
This week, I visited Dairy Kastle to see what makes the spot special. I decided to try a peanut butter Oreo milkshake and was very impressed. The homemade vanilla ice cream was delicious, and there was a perfect amount of Oreos and peanut butter mixed in. The milkshake cost $4.69 for a small. I also tried a bite of a “Derby dipped cone,” which is vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate, and it was very good. The cone cost $3.25.
These treats made it easy to see why Dairy Kastle is so popular and how it has stayed in business for so long. Bellarmine student Jolie Parker says she has been a fan for quite a while.
“I love Dairy Kastle,” Parker said. “In high school, me and my friends would go get ice cream on special occasions, and now I like to take my friends from college. I have a lot of good memories there.”
Louisville student Molly Sharber says she likes to stop by Dairy Kastle for a treat after classes.
“It’s so close to campus, so I like to get ice cream after a test or finals as a reward,” Sharber said. “I really like their vanilla milkshakes.”
On nice days, there are picnic tables nearby to enjoy your ice cream outside. Unfortunately, on the day I visited, it was raining, so I opted to eat in the car. Despite the rain, there were still plenty of customers lined up outside to get a taste of Dairy Kastle’s delicious ice cream.
I am sure we could all use a special treat as we get closer to finals week and the end of the semester, so if you are looking for a spot near campus to take a break from studying and grab some ice cream, I definitely recommend Dairy Kastle.
