Fun Times at Fun Tea: A Review

Updated: Apr 23

By Lindsay Smith

I recently visited the restaurant Fun Tea on Bardstown Road, which is conveniently located only a mile and a half from Bellarmine. It makes for a great walk in the warm upcoming summer months.

Fun Tea is known for its boba, which is a Taiwanese drink that is made with tea, milk (or a non-dairy substitute), your choice of flavorings and tapioca pearls. You can pick from a wide variety of toppings including fruit jelly, cheese cream caps or puddings.

Other popular menu items include milk tea, fruit tea, and lemonade in a variety of flavors like “blood moon” (strawberry) or “sunset love” (mango passion fruit).

I chose one of their milk-based smoothie options and tried the Orea chocolate flavor. I was given the option to top it with boba or ice cream, so I chose to add cookies and cream ice cream. It was delicious and the perfect way to beat the heat with a sweet treat.

The drink cost $5.75, and it was a very big portion that made you feel you got your money’s worth out of your purchase. The shop also has an incentive for when you buy nine drinks, you can get the 10th free.

The inside of the restaurant is also filled with lots of tables both inside and outside that are perfect for studying or chatting with friends. The staff inside are also very helpful, especially if it is your first time there, and they have great suggestions for what to try.

Other Bellarmine students agree that Fun Tea is a place their peers must visit.

“I’m not a huge fan of boba, but I enjoyed Fun Tea,” sophomore Sarah Recktenwald said. “Their menu has items to fit any taste and fun twists on classics – like adding boba to a slushie.”

Sophomore Marco Vazquez said: “The workers are kind and polite, and there’s a lot of cool tea options. I love their earthy Thai tea boba as well as their very fruity honey rose litchi tea with mango popping boba.”

Even the inside of the restaurant leaves an impression on visitors.

“The wall [in the restaurant] has a mural which tells the tale of the shop owners’ journey from Vietnam to the United States,” freshman Sophia Tuma said. “My friends and I love to go there for a sweet treat.”

Overall, I give Fun Tea 4.5 stars out of 5. My only knock will be that parking is a bit challenging but no more so than many other places on Bardstown Road.
