BU wrestling compete in Puerto Rico

The Bellarmine wrestling team finished its season strong by winning the NCWA National Championship in Puerto Rico in early March.

The team spent five days in Puerto Rico, and this was the first time many of the wrestlers had traveled out of the country.

Sophomore William Muckler said he had never been outside the U.S.

“It was cool that the sport of wrestling brought us there,” William Muckler said.

The trip included competing for a national title and some fun beach time.

“The first day we were able to spend at the beach together, and we were within walking distance,” Muckler said.

The team competed against 73 different teams from the United States and Puerto Rico and Bellarmine placed first overall.

Sophomore Jack Parker won the NCWA National Champion the 125-pound weight class, sophomore Zac Cowan won for the 149-pound class, sophomore Cole Nance won for the 165-pound class, and senior Devan Hendricks won for the 174-pound class.

“It was truly a great feeling winning. This was my first national championship win,” Jack Parker said.

Sports isn’t always about just competing. It’s also about making the memories along the way with the team.

First-year wrestler Kennedy Wyatt said: “My favorite memory was the second day we were there and waking up and seeing the beach. We saw a couple of iguanas when we first got there because I knew they were native there. I had just never seen one before.”

The team did lots of activities other than wrestling while they were there.

“The last day we got to ourselves, and we took that day to go to the national park, where we hiked up the mountains and saw waterfalls that we swam in and lots of natural waterslides,” Wyatt said.

Muckler said, “The Puerto Rico trip was a really cool experience, saw lots of sites, ate lots of good food, and we competed well and ended up winning the tournament.”
