Everyone has something they enjoy doing outside of school or work. Some read books, some hike, and others collect rocks. Some people, though, have hobbies or hidden talents not many others have.
Senior Colleen Gates sews her own clothes in her spare time. She does this whenever she can, but she said she wishes she had more time.
“During the school year it’s kind of hard because it’s so time-consuming. During quarantine when I was doing online school and not working, I was doing it all day, every day. It got addicting,” she said.
Gates said she wants to make a career out of sewing and selling the clothes she makes.
“I’ve always thought about making my kids clothes and like starting my own business. I have like a little business thing through Instagram. It’s nothing too crazy, but I definitely want to keep doing that,” she said. Her Instagram is @colleenzcloset7.
Senior Sydney Henderson does acrylic pour painting and embroidery. She is a middle school math education major but enjoys arts and crafts.
“I started making it a hobby during COVID. Embroidery is very fun and relaxing besides getting pricked by the needle. Acrylic pour painting is fun because you can pour different colors and shapes in it. It’s something different every time,” Henderson said.
Even though this doesn’t relate to her major or career, she said she wants to make it a side job.
“Part of me wants to do a side gig or a side hustle regarding arts and crafts if teaching doesn’t go well. Maybe I could do this and teaching at the same time,” she said.
In his free time, business administration major Paul Kotarski plays the banjo and carves wood.
“It depends on my class schedule and how much stuff I have going on with school at the time. I usually spend a couple of hours in a week at least,” he said.
Kotarski encourages others to check out wood carving. “Making stuff and working with your hands is a really enjoyable experience, and it’s really fulfilling,” he said.
He said he thinks it would be cool to have a career in woodcarving and wants to do it for the rest of his life.
“I think it would be really cool to do something that I like doing for a career. I don’t know how feasible it would be, but if an opportunity ever came up then definitely,” he said.
