If you have been at the Sport, Recreation, and Fitness Center (SuRF) recently, you probably noticed the lat pulldown machine has been out of order since students came back from winter break. The machine is a staple in many students' workout routines, but there is only one machine, leaving many staff members, students, and other gym users wondering when it will be repaired.
Director of Campus Recreation Shawn Newton said the SuRF put in a purchase order for the parts over winter break, so they are on the way. However, the company that handles the gym’s maintenance, Design2Wellness, must wait for the parts to be shipped to their warehouse before they can be transported to Bellarmine.
"What takes the longest is for the parts to come in. They are ordering parts from different manufacturers across the country," Newton said. "All of those parts have to make it to a central warehouse, and then those technicians load up their cars and bring it here.”
The machine broke when the cable on the machine frayed at the top due to normal wear and tear. A maintenance team from Design2Wellness was at Bellarmine performing an inspection just a few days before Christmas when they discovered the machine was not working properly. "When the maintenance guys were out here, they said, 'Now that we've seen this you have to take this offline,'" Newton said.
The cable for the lat pulldown machine is locked away.
When Design2Wellness comes out to inspect the equipment, the technicians inspect all the equipment, and the lat pulldown machine is not the only piece of gym equipment that needs repair. The SuRF will also be replacing various cables, pullies, bushing pins, seat pads and roller pads throughout the gym. The downside to this is that the more parts the SuRF orders, the longer students must wait for them to come in. The harsh weather across the United States could also delay some of the parts from being delivered.
The SuRF submitted the purchase order the first week of January, and it totaled just over $1,200 for all the various pieces of equipment that are being replaced in the gym.
