Zumba instructor Ivonne Obando leads the pre-zumba warm-up at the SuRF.

Back from her San Francisco class tour, Zumba instructor Ivonne Obando has returned to Bellarmine to resume her weekly Tuesday classes.

Dance meets fitness every Tuesday at 6 p.m. with Obando at the SuRF Center Fitness Courts.

This free class offers a space to release stress and build energy for the week and is open to the entire BU community.

With a mix of Bellarmine students and community members, this zumba class is inclusive and welcomes everyone.

“Traveling and getting to host in places like the San Francisco bridge is great, but I really missed my daughter and getting to dance and work out with these girls,” she said. “This is what I really enjoy.”

Sophomore Bailey Walker began attending classes shortly after enrolling at Bellarmine.

She said she danced throughout high school and getting to dance once a week is something she really enjoys.

Newcomer Madelyn Sheldon, a junior, said she couldn’t wait to get started.

“Zumba is fun, and I get to get my little dancey, dance on,” she said.

Obando makes it clear that no one needs to be a dancer or have experience to join the class.

She said, “We’re just getting healthy in a fun way.”

Bringing her Latin roots into every move from warm-ups to the official class, Obando said students can expect to move along to the rhythm of Salsa, Denbow, Bachata, and Reguetón in a span of 60 minutes.

Class ends with some freestyle dancing where everyone can have fun and dance to their own beat before coming back together and cooling down.

Obando invites everyone to join and share her passion for zumba and an active lifestyle through music.

“Coming to Zumba is like having a mini family reunion every time,” she said.
